Pillar 1

Making Gloucestershire a better place for the future

Why is this important?

Making Gloucestershire a better place for the future is about looking and planning ahead.

It is about making changes now – but recognising that they may take some time to materialise.

This includes the work we are doing with partners to contribute towards improving life expectancy and seeking to increase the years people spend in good health, as well as narrowing the life expectancy gap across our county.

The NHS is only part of the picture. It’s about communities themselves, and a wider set of partners working together.

Our work in this area includes promoting healthy lifestyles and preventing people from becoming unwell e.g. by reducing obesity, smoking, alcohol use and the effects of poverty.

By altering the focus from treating illness to preventing it, this approach aims to create healthier communities and ensure that everyone can actively contribute to their own health and wellbeing.

This will make a lasting impact on the health of Gloucestershire’s population, and it supports one of the Government’s three shifts from the emerging 10 Year Health Plan, focusing on prevention rather than sickness.

What have we done?

We are investing in local communities, and ensuring local people are involved in the decisions about what matters to them.

A key part of this is building relationships and supporting the development and voice of the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector to build resilient communities.

We are providing support to patients to help them stop smoking and commissioning services for people to manage remain active through initiatives such as We Can Move.
