Dementia affects over 850 000 people in the UK. It mainly affects people over 65 years of age, but it is also diagnosed in smaller numbers in people under 65 years of age.

We want to ensure that people with dementia are diagnosed as early as possible and with their families are supported to plan for the future.

If you are worried about your memory, or the memory of someone you care about, speak to your GP, who may do some tests to rule out other causes for memory loss before referring you to the Managing Memory Together service. Provided by Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust, the service includes memory assessment and diagnosis, community dementia nurse support, information and education.

Community Dementia Nurses work closely with the Dementia Adviser Service, delivered by the Alzheimer’s Society.

Charlton Lane Hospital provides specialist assessment, treatment and care for older people with functional mental health problems and people with dementia, including some inpatient services.

The Dementia Training and Education Strategy for Gloucestershire and the accompanying training programme is open to all Health and Social Care staff, the Voluntary and Independent sector, and those who are caring for a person with dementia.
