We are aware that two hospital trusts in neighbouring counties have taken the decision to limit referrals from expectant parents who do not reside in the counties where the hospitals are based.

We have been informed that these decisions have been taken on grounds of safety and capacity.

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will no longer accept out-of-area referrals if the individual is more than 12 weeks pregnant.

South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust will now prioritise referrals from expectant parents who are registered with a GP in the Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care System.

This means they will no longer accept referrals from individuals registered with GPs within Gloucestershire.

We understand that this news will be disappointing to some families in Gloucestershire. This decision will be continually reviewed by the Trusts and NHS Gloucestershire will remain in close communication with them.

Whilst women and birthing people have the right to choose where they give birth, that choice is contingent on availability and service capacity. Individual NHS organisations have the right to make decisions if they feel it is necessary in order to preserve a safe service and ensure sufficient capacity for their local population.

We know that this will especially affect families who live in Gloucestershire very close to the borders, who would have shorter travelling distances if they were able to give birth at hospitals in neighbouring counties.

If you have any concerns about where you plan to give birth, please do speak to your community midwife.
