Plans for a new and improved building for Hucclecote Surgery have been approved.
The new premises will replace the existing surgery in Brookfield Road and will be built on land occupied by the former Jordans Brook House, which has been deemed surplus to the requirements of Gloucestershire County Council.
The planned building will have 17 clinical rooms, including three training rooms, a patient drop-off bay and parking for 56 vehicles.
Practice staff operating from the new building will include GPs, nurses, healthcare assistants, a clinical pharmacist, first contact physiotherapists, mental health professionals, social prescribers and living well professionals as well as the practice manager, receptionists, care navigators and administrative staff.
It is hoped that building work will begin in late spring/early summer after clearance of the site and work to prepare the ground following the granting of approval by councillors on Gloucestershire County Council’s Planning Committee.
The scheme, serving around 10,000 patients, will be developed by the County Council and a construction firm is in place to carry out the building work.
Hucclecote Surgery’s current building, which is less than half a mile away from the new location, was built in the 1960s and is 45% undersized, with clinical rooms smaller than the recommended sizes.
Dr James Lambert, GP Partner at Hucclecote said:
“This is great news for our patients who will be able to access care and support in a new premises which is fit for purpose.
Our practice staff are also looking forward to delivering care in the building that has more space and improved facilities.
We will continue to work closely with NHS Gloucestershire ICB and the County Council to bring this exciting project to completion and we look forward to opening our doors at the new site.”
Helen Goodey, Director of Primary Care and Place at NHS Gloucestershire, said:
“Improving GP surgery facilities for local patients in Hucclecote has been a priority for NHS Gloucestershire since 2016.
We’re delighted that this scheme, which will meet the needs of the local community, will now move forward at pace.”
Councillor Paul Hodgkinson, cabinet member for public health at Gloucestershire County Council, said:
“Getting the go‑ahead for this new £5m GP surgery is fantastic news for people in Hucclecote.
The current building is no longer fit for modern healthcare, so this investment will make a real difference to patients and staff.
The new surgery will offer more space, better facilities and room for a wider range of health professionals, helping residents get the care and support they need closer to home.
I’m pleased we can now move forward and see this much‑needed project take shape.”
