The NHS in Gloucestershire is inviting residents to share their views as it launches a new period of engagement looking at local health priorities and how services should develop in the coming years.

Getting Ready for the Future NOW! is an opportunity for local people to get involved in shaping the five year commissioning plan for the NHS looking at both the significant challenges and opportunities ahead.

Demand for healthcare is rising, with more people living longer and with multiple long-term conditions. At the same time, our NHS faces a tough financial environment, with costs increasing for medicines, staff and services. Without change, services risk becoming unsustainable.

Despite these challenges, Gloucestershire has a strong tradition of partnership working between the NHS, local government and the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector. Open collaboration will help identify opportunities to do things differently and put the building blocks in place to ensure the NHS can support future generations with high quality, safe services.

Sarah Truelove, Chief Executive (Transition) at NHS Gloucestershire ICB, said:

“Now is such an important time for health and care. We want to deliver on the health priorities of local people and prepare the ground for a strong and sustainable NHS longer term. By working together, we can meet the challenges we face now and get ready for the years ahead.”

“We are committed to listening to local people and working in partnership to shape services that are fit for the future. The views and ideas from partners, local people and staff are vital to help us make the right decisions for Gloucestershire.”

What we want to discuss

The engagement focuses on understanding the challenges and exploring new ways to deliver care and support. Feedback is sought on the principles that should guide health and care services, immediate priorities for Gloucestershire, and how the NHS should develop over the next five years.

This includes:

  • Neighbourhood health and care: Developing and tailoring support and services to meet local needs, working with communities to tackle health inequalities, and delivering joined-up care close to home where possible. Getting Ready for the Future NOW! also looks at services further afield, including specialist care or treatment.
  • Online, digital and technology: Making the most of advances in technology to improve care, support people to manage their health and make services more efficient.
  • Wellbeing, prevention and maintaining health independence: Supporting people to live healthier lives, preventing ill health and providing targeted support early and reducing health inequalities across Gloucestershire.

Feedback will help shape local plans and ensure services meet the health needs of Gloucestershire’s communities.
